The Suzuki Swift has been one of the models in the subcompact class that may look like an econobox from the outside, yet possesses the innards of a sporty hot hatch. Since its launch in 2004, the Swift has gone on to sell some 5.3 million copies, making it one of the best sellers of the Suzuki range.

Now, Suzuki launches an all-new Swift in its Japanese home market. While retaining the same profile that has been a trademark from way back, the new car has a more aggressive front fascia with a lower-set grille and more pronounced swept-back headlamp design. This, along with the wider fenders and more menacing stance give it a truly sporty character even while standing still.

What set the new car apart from its predecessors are the technologies under the metal. The Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS), for instance, features a 1.2-liter DualJet hybrid motor for both powerful yet efficient performance. The Suzuki Swift RS, on the other hand, boasts of a 1.0-liter BooserJet motor, which Suzuki says, achieves brisk acceleration yet still maintains excellent fuel economy. The latter is mated to a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic gearbox.

The new Swift also packs a slew of safety technologies such as Dual Sensor Brake Support collision mitigation system. The smart feature consists of a monocular camera and laser sensor. It likewise has headlight assist that adjusts according to road and lighting conditions and compensates for any driver shortcomings to help illuminate the road yet still avoid blinding oncoming traffic. And adaptive cruise control helps keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front—all in the name of safer driving.

The Suzuki Swift’s Japanese launch will be followed by availability in other global markets soon thereafter.
