Autoliv and NVIDIA Hope to Field Self-Driving Volvos Within a Few Years

While Volvo has made a name for itself as one of the safest cars in the world, the Swedish carmaker seems bent on carving out a niche when it comes to autonomous mobility.  This is what it wants to impart as it invests heavily in various ventures that aim to make the tech mainstream within a few years.

Its latest bid is a team up with leading automotive safety company Autoliv and artificial intelligence and visual learning specialist NVIDIA. The three companies will work closely with Volvo’s and Autliv’s own software firm, Zenuity.

The venture will take its cue from NVIDIA’s very own AI car computing know-how. In case you’re wondering, NVIDIA(A is a name synonymous with computer hardware and software and may even be one of the components running inside your electronic device. At present, it focuses on providing artificial intelligence solutions.

The joint venture hopes to realize Level 4 self-driving technologies that aren’t just autonomous but safe as well. Known as next-generation self-driving tech, such systems aim to recognize objects in their natural environment and ensure that the car will drive around them to avoid any untoward incidents.

Apart from this, the system will also make use of images gathered and utilize these to help it drive along a set route. Of course, it will likewise learn to react to real-time situations to ensure a truly safe self-drive.

Volvo hopes to have a self-driving vehicle go on sale by the year 2021.
