As far as compact sedans go, the Kia Forte has been one of those nameplates that can be considered as a left-field choice. It’s an alternative for those that don’t exactly want to go for the usual suspects. While Kia isn’t bent on changing this anytime soon, the Korean carmaker does want to inject some sporty flair into its offering via the refreshed 2019 Kia Forte.

Making its entrance at the ongoing North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the compact takes styling cues from the chic Stinger that was revealed last year. The front end, for instance, receives a larger tiger nose grille flanked by tapered headlights. The rear end, meanwhile, gets a revised bumper design, updated taillights, and a horizontal trim bar.

Just like the outside, the cabin gets a bit more stylish, thanks to touches like less buttons for a more clutter-free appearance. Kia has also thrown in a free standing 8-inch touchscreen that controls the infotainment system. And the carmaker also claims that thanks to clever packaging, interior space has likewise improved.

Apart from these, the Kia Forte also gets a host of upscale features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and wireless smartphone charging. It likewise boasts of a 320-watt Harman Kardon audio system.

Under the hood lies a 2.0-liter Nu inline-four gasoline motor that puts out 148hp and 180Nm. This engine, Kia says, is tuned more for economy, thanks to tech such as the Atkinson’s cycle and cooled exhaust gas recirculation. It is paired with either a 6-speed manual or Kia’s new in-house Continuously Variable Transmission. The latter tranny, dubbed Intelligent Variable Transmission, is notable in that it uses step shift logic running on a chain belt rather than a push-type pulley. This, Kia claims, allows it to operate like a traditional clutchless gearbox.

Besides being a bit sportier, the Kia Forte can also be had with a host of new safety tech. These include forward collision avoidance, blind spot warning, and lane keep assist, among others.

The new Kia Forte debuts at the North American International Auto Show.
