Toyota Set to Bring Its Flagship Century Sedan Into the 21st, err, Century

The Toyota Crown, along with the equally luxurious Lexus LS, are considered as the flagship Toyota sedans. Yet believe it or not, Toyota actually has an even more upscale model in its Japanese home market. And that car, the Century, is about to enter its third generation.

Set to be revealed at this year’s 45th Tokyo Motor Show, the Toyota Century continues the long-standing Japanese tradition set by this full-size number back in 1967. While the stately shape is a evolution of the previous generation (which ran for roughly 20 years) , the Japanese carmaker put in some modern touches to bring the car into the 21st, err, century.

The dual structure grille, for instance, has a crown pattern that gives the car a powerful presence upon its arrival. It is flanked by triple projector LED headlamps that light the eay even on the darkest roads. The body, meanwhile, is now longer with a lengthened wheelbase. This translates to greater passenger room, especially in the rear quarters. The blacked-out rear combination lamp trim finishes things off with a sense of unity.

As mentioned above, the longer dimensions promise increased levels of passenger comfort inside the ultra-luxurious cabin. The rear seat now gets a power footrest while the decreased height difference between the scuff plates and floor, along with the increased size of the door openings, mean a more relaxed ambience.

Apart from the look, the new Toyota Century will now be powered by a 5.0-liter V8 hybrid motor. While previous models only got either a V8 or a larger and thirstier V12, the new iteration promises more efficiency while still providing gobs of smooth motivational force.

First seen in 1967, the Toyota Century was created to celebrate the 100th birthday of Toyota founder Sakichi Toyoda (February 14, 1967). The first gen saw production for 30 years, with only minor model updates throughout its lifespan. A full mode change came in 1997, which itself went on for 20 production years.

The third-generation Toyota Century will be revealed to the public at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show at the Tokyo Big Sight from October 25 to November 5, 2017. It will go on sale in the middle of 2018.
