The local motorcycle industry has achieved a milestone as it hit the 1-million sales mark last 2016, upping its year-on-year sales record by 34%. This news came from the Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association’s (MDPPA) latest industry report.
According to MDPPA, the total motorcycle sales in 2016 reached 1,140,338 which is a remarkable feat in comparison to the 850,509 units sold in 2015. This is the first time the industry has hit the 1-million sales mark.
MDPPA credits this achievement to the strong customer demand for motorcycles during the first half of 2016. The report stated that the industry closed mid-year 2016 with a total of 544,699 units successfully sold, a noteworthy improvement from mid-year 2015’s 382,568 units.
Furthermore, MDPPA said that mopeds (or “underbones” as referred to by some bike aficionados), are also among the hottest-selling motorcycle types in the country in 2016. The said motorcycle type gained a huge chunk from last year’s sales pie at 37% (or 418,043 total units sold).
The next biggest-selling motorcycle type is the business category. It charted a total of 368,270 unit sales last year, which accounted for 32% of last year’s sales record. Finally, motorcycles with automatic transmissions posted a total of 274,104 units last year, a 51% improvement from 2015’s sales record.
