Volkswagen’s return to the Philippine market may have only taken place a few years ago, yet it has already gained a foothold in the local auto industry. Proof of this are the growing number of VW dealerships, as well as vehicles out on the road. And now, the German brand has reason to celebrate once again with its victories at this year’s Auto Focus People’s and Media’s Choice Awards held last October 13, 2016 at the Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig City.
Volkswagen bagged eight prestigious trophies in the various Media’s Choice categories. The winning streak started off when the luxuriously large Touareg garnered the Best Value for Money prize. The motoring media found its potent 245hp, 550Nm 3.0-liter V6 commonrail direct injection diesel motor more than capable for tackling the urban jungle while its 4Motion all-wheel drive with Adaptive Chassis control equally up to the task when taken off the beaten path.
The Passat and Touran, on the other hand, both got Best Value for Money awards, along with Best Engine Performance honors. The Touran, for its 2.0-liter turbo direct injection TDI diesel lump that puts out 110hp and 280Nm, and the Passat with the vaunted 2.0-liter TSI turbo gasoline mill that develops a rousing 220hp and 350Nm, mated to a dual clutch transmission (DSG).
It was the iconic Volkswagen Golf GTI, however, that took home the majority of awards for the night. The 2.0-liter turbo stratified injection (TSI) lump with its 220hp and 350Nm, coursed through a six-speed direct shift gearbox (DSG) bagged the Best Engine Performance prize, as well as the Best Value for Money trophy for its competitive price. But it was the timeless design of the car, that has remained throughout its rich seven-generation history, that wowed the journalists and prompted them to bestow on it the coveted Best Design award.
