However, Matthew 28:19 is frequently used in attempts to prove that the Trinity is a biblical teaching. Jesus’ words to the women are mainly a repetition of those of the angel (Mt 28:5a, 7b). Matthew recorded many of Jesus’ miracles, sermons, and words so that today we can know what Matthew knew – that God loves us and Jesus saves! Only quotes by the church commentators from an earlier time could betray the truth, as indeed seventeen such quotes exist and do so—each one omitting the trinitarian baptismal formula in their direct quotes from Matthew 28:19.1 [See Footnote 1 at end.]

Some 17 times in his works prior to Nicea, Eusebius quotes Matthew 28:19 as "Go and make disciples of all nations in my name" without mentioning the Trinity baptism command.

In his writings after the council of Nicea, the traditional form including the Trinity baptism formula is found 5 times, although most of these are not above question.

The gospel of Matthew ends with Jesus' powerful words commissioning His disciples to ministry, climaxing in the phrase: "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age," (Matthew 28:19-20). It chronicles the earthly life of Jesus.
