As far as the CAGED system is concerned, I have my doubts that it was invented simultaneously with the standard tuning. However, the main difference between guitar and bass is the B string on guitar which introduces an interval of a third when going from the G to the B string, while the rest of the strings are tuned in fourths. It is how the guitar works and comes directly from the tuning of the instrument combined with western harmony. The first place I encountered it was in the early 70s in the book "Joe Pass Guitar Method." As has been mentioned, CAGED isn't a system, and it's by NO means music theory. Laying eggs in a nesting area has been shown to be one of … It is a fact. It's simply a method of mapping out the fingerboard. The CAGED system was not 'invented'. Of course not all of those players might have called it the "CAGED system" but the CAGED pattern exists whether you give it that name or not. This is more important than just relating five chord shapes to five major scale shapes. The CAGED system seems to work fine for guitar. Lion egg producers are finding that the birds make good use of the enhancements of the new system, with almost all of the hens choosing to sleep on the perches and 95% of eggs laid in the nest box area. Battery cages are a housing system used for various animal production methods, but primarily for egg-laying hens. The name arises from the arrangement of rows and columns of identical cages connected together, in a unit, as in an artillery battery.Although the term is usually applied to poultry farming, similar cage systems are used for other animals.

Joe didn't call it CAGED, of course, but it was the same basic idea. The heart of the CAGED method is about knowing how to find chords as well as chord tones anywhere on the fretboard. In the book “Scales & Modes in the Beginning: Created Especially for Guitarist” (an excellent resource, by the way), author Ron Middlebrook states that LA Studio player/composer Jack Marshall was the one who coined the phrase, “CAGED system,” but he did not claim to have invented it. This is a mistake. The CAGED system on the fretboard was not invented by any one guitarist. Another problem with they common explanations of the CAGED system is that it is always related to major chords only.
Interestingly, this makes the CAGED system less complicated for bass. I think the confusion comes from two things: the CAGES pattern (the pattern the CAGED system is based on) and the CAGED system itself. – topo Reinstate Monica Apr 11 '19 at 4:42 @ToddWilcox - 'invented' as much as Australia was 'invented'.
