The North American market is one of, if not the largest markets for car companies like Volkswagen. Cars like the Jetta, for instance, have been selling in large quantities here since its debut in 1979. And now, the erstwhile model enters its seventh generation, fittingly makng its entrance at this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

One look at the new sedan and you’ll immediately notice just how swoopy the lines are. The roof is now more sloping, with cues taken from the stylish Arteon that was launched recently. There are lots of upscale touches, including stuff like LED headlamps, that give the car a more premium vibe.

Now longer, wider, and taller with shorter overhangs, the added girth translates to a more spacious interior. The roomier quarters are paired with a cabin that is decidedly more high tech in both feel and execution.

The instrument cluster, for example, can be ordered as a Digital Cockpit. It allows the driver to customize driving data to suit his r her preference. Speaking of customization, ocupants can tone the mood using the available ambient lighting that features up to 10 different hues.

More high tech goodies come in the form of safety systems. The VW Jetta now gets stuff like adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring with rear traffic alert, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and autonomous emergency braking, just to name a few.

Power comes from the 1.4-liter turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder motor that saw duty in the previous iteration. It now puts out 147hp and 249Nm of torque. Owners can choose between a 6-speed manual or new 8-speed automatic gearbox with start/stop technology.

The new Volkswagen Jetta will go on sale later this year.
