While the Jeepney is considered an icon of Philippine pop culture, the sad reality is that many of these colorful conveyances that are a fixture on our roads are getting old. With the majority of our country’s staple form of transport being over 15 years old, the safety and environment-friendliness of these jeeps are under a thick cloud of doubt.
This is why various groups are pushing the Department of Transportation to speed up the implementation of its Jepney Modernization Program. To show its support for the initiative, leading truck body builder Centro Manufacturing Corporation puts forth what it believes is the future of the Jeepney, using tried-and-tested Isuzu parts.
The Isuzu-Centro Jeepney prototype takes its cue from the Isuzu NHR light truck. This means it has a proven chassis and easy serviceability. The Jeepney gets a modern twist with a side entrance and front doors that enhance passenger entry and exit, and as well as safety for all occupants. The perimeter center-facing bench can seat up to 17 people, though Centro says it plans to field a longer version that can seat up to 23 passengers.
The vehicle will be powered by a 2.8-liter diesel motor, which Isuzu says is a popular choice and makes it easy for operators to get parts when needed. Moreover, the brand new Jeepney will ensure that easily-available financing will be on offer to help replace the existing rolling coffins that ply our roads.
Isuzu Philippines Corporation and Centro will showcase the Jeepney Prottoype at the Isuzu Truck Fest that will run from April 20-23, 2017 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. Get to see what could very well be the future King of Philippine roads.
