Did You Know That Modifying That Motorcycle May Be Dangerous to Your Riding Health?

Vehicle customization has become quite rampant among the motoring public these days. Besides the four-wheeled community, a vast majority of motorcycle riders and owners have begun to modify their rides in the name of sporty looks and added performance. But did you know, the Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association notes,  that doing so may actually do more harm than good?

Just like improperly modified cars and SUVs, a motorbike that has undergone a shabby customization job may put its owner and other motorists at risk. Changing headlights, taillights, and the like to “brighter” bulbs may tend to blind oncoming riders and motorists. Then there’s the issue of electrical problems.

Beyond cosmetics, changing mufflers, ignition and fuel systems to increase power can definitely pose a danger to the rider. Removing rev limiters may just be too much to handle for most foks. And yes, rev limiters are there to help prevent engine damage. Speaking of fuel, altering the fuel system can lead to increased fuel consumption and more frequent visits to the filling station.

Apart from these dangers, keep in mind that not all mods comply with government regulations. Some may net fines and penalties due to their posing grave threats to the riding public.

So before tinkering with that motorcycle, it is best to check with your dealer to see which modifications are allowable. And if you really must change a few parts on your motorbike, do it in the name of safety for all.
