Lancer’s Not Dead: Mitsubishi Debuts Grand Lancer in China and Taiwan

It was reported around a month ago that Mitsubishi Motors Corporation would soon be ending production of the erstwhile lancer. This left quite a few folks grieving, especially the Mitsu faithful who have owned or currently own either a classic or modern-day iteration. Moreover, Mitsubishi top brass announced sometime in 2015 that they would not be replacing the model once it bids adieu and would instead focus on crossovers and SUVs.

Apparently, the Mitsubishi China and Taiwan offices didn’t seem to get the memo.  The said divisions recently unveiled the new 2017 Mitsubishi Grand Lancer. While it may look somewhat like the current model Lancer from the side, the front and rear quarters are all new. The grlle, for instance, takes its cue from the Montero Sport and Outlander, now with the Dynamic Shield treatment. Even the bumper receives chrome trim, just like the two SUVs.

The rear, meanwhile, sports a redesigned trunk and L-shaped taillights. Overall, it’s a more upscale and refreshing touch.

Inside, the new Mitsubishi Grand Lancer also gets a new dashboard, which uncannily looks like that one used in its Montero Sport cousin. Not a bad thing, though, as it is modern and has all the niceties within easy reach.  Large infotainment touchscreen, auto climate control, and a three-spoke steering wheel are ll there to help the driver keep total control of the vehicle.

Powering the new Grand Lancer is a 1.8-liter 4J10 in-line four-cylinder that puts out 140hp and 176Nm of torque. Mated to the tried-and tested INVECS-III Continuously Variable Transmission, the MIVEC-equipped motor promises both adequate punch and miserly fuel consumption.

Safety is also part of the Lancer, Grand Lancer arsenal. Six airbags, hill start assist, stability control and the like are all part of the package.

At present, the Mitsubishi Grand Lancer is only available in the Chinese and Taiwanese markets. Whether we will get it in our shores is still a big question.
