The story of Cúchulainn is one of Ireland's best known legends.

His uncle, Conor MacNessa, was the king of Ulster.

The Hound of Ulster: Of all the early literatures of Europe, two from opposite corners of the continent, have obvious comparisons, the Greek hero Achilles and the Irish champion Cuchulain. During the war Cuchulainn had killed a man named Cailidín, who had six children. At this point, the story is interrupted by Cú Chulainn suddenly giving a long series of advice to his foster-son Lugaid Réoderg, the newly chosen king of Tara. Maeve blamed Cuchulainn for the defeat and she plotted her revenge. The adventures of Cuchulainn (pronounced Cou-hou-linn) are spread across seventy-six tales contained in the collection of stories known as the Ulster cycle, which tell of the Ulaidh, the ancient people from whom the province of Ulster got its name.

He was said to be the son of Deichtine and the god Lugh, and the nephew of Conchobar mac Nessa, the King of Ulster. As to whether he actually ever really lived at all, well that's a different discussion. I'd guess the Cúchulainn Legend could be set any time between say 500BC and 1AD. Internal evidence from the stories (his uncle Conchobar mac Nessa is claimed to have been a contemporary of Christ) put the stories in the early 1st century.

He appears in the stories of the Ulster Cycle, and Scottish and Manx folklore.

The king lived in a great fort, at a place called Eamhain Macha. When the war between Connacht and Ulster was over Cuchulainn returned to his home in Dundalk.
