Audi is known for producing some of the most tech-savvy cars in the market. Offerings like the Audi A4 diesel, for instance, aren’t just loaded to the gills but are likewise touted to as being one of the most fuel-efficient variants of the lot. Now, the German carmaker wants to extend its lead in the fuel economy race by offering two nameplates that run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
The Audi A4 Avant (Wagon) G-Tron and the A5 Sportback G-Tron are the newest members of the Audi family. What makes these two nameplates special is that they both run, as mentioned above, on CNG. They utilize a 2.0-liter TFSI bivalent four-cylinder motor producing 170 and 270Nm.
This mill is differentiated from its standard gasoline counterpart by an innovative combustion process that allows it to run on either Audi e-gas, conventional CNG, or gasoline. Audi claims that the CNG models can run up to 500kms on CNG. Once the tank reaches 10 bar, the engine will automatically switch to regular gasoline mode, which will make for an additional 450kms. All told, one can run up to 950kms before filing up on CNG and unleaded petrol.
While fuel efficiency is the main selling point, Audi promises not to sacrifice performance. The A4 Avant, for instance, can accelerate from 0-100kph in just 8.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 223kph.
The Audi A4 Avant G-Tron and A5 Sportback G-Tron are now available to order in Germany. The two models will join the rest of the Audi line-up at te upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
