Up to the challenge: About 500 Chevron volunteers cleaning up a 600 meter coastline along San Pascual, Batangas when the beach is not even visible under piles of debris and trash.

Each year, Chevron Philippines Inc employees, contractors, and other stakeholders leave the comfort of their offices and places of work to reach out to their fellowmen in an activity known as Volunteer Week.  As the name suggests, each of the participants volunteer their time, energy and resources to help those in need.

The event, which has been taking place for the past 10 years, has helped numerous individuals, communities, and the like and made their lives much more meaningful and productive. These endeavors include road safety for students, skills training for out-of-school youths and stay-at-home moms, homes for the homeless, therapy for sick children, caring for the aged, tree planting activities, and beach and environmental clean-ups, just to name a few.

For its latest bid, the CPI Volunteer Week witnessed some 500 Volunteers train out-of-school youths and stay-at-home moms make soap so they can one day put up a small business. The importance of road safety was taught to school kids from Batangas, using role-paying as a tool to get their message across. Then there were the cancer-stricken children who were treated to music therapy while their parents were taught the value of proper nutrition, as well as given some help via counseling sessions. And the culminating event was the beach cleanup drive in San Pascual, Batangas where tons of debris and garbage were collected and disposed of so as not to endanger the Olive-Ridley Sea Turtles that nest in these areas.

With all these, Chevron hopes to enrich the lives of countless people, even if it be one week at a a time.
