Jeep Unveils a New, More Modern Wrangler

Jeep aficionados will note that the American off-road vehicle maker tends to update its erstwhile Wrangler not very often. In fact, the last generation JK was first revealed in 2007. After a good ten-year run, Jeep finally redesigns the off-roader with some cool modern touches to boot.

A quick glance at the all-new JL Jeep Wrangler reveals a sleeker shape. Sure, the distinctive Jeep profile remains. Yet the headlights are now more modern, as is the keystone grille and front bumper. And the daytime running lights are now fender mounted. The windshield also seems to be a bit more rakish, with an easier bolt-off mechanism, Jeep says.  Unlike the previous model’s 28-bolt configuration, this one can easily be removed by unscrewing just four bolts. And there are special tools included to help you out.

At the rear, a larger window improves visibility, while a new lip spoiler is available for the first time. This aids in aerodynamic efficiency. And a reverse camera finds its way here, helping drivers get into those tight spaces.

Just like the outside, the cabin also gets a bit more modern. There’s a new center console that can store smartphones and other knick-knacks, a host of USB and aux ports, and other mod cons. It’s designed to make life easier even as you rough it in the great outdoors.

Jeep will be offering the Wrangler in three roof configurations. There’s a hardtop that features a Freedom Top for easier removal, an updated convertible, and a power soft top. The last one is more like a Targa that doesn’t necessarily retract the whole top but still allows for open-air motoring.

The new Jeep Wrangler will be powered by the tried-and-true 3.6-liter V6 that puts out 285hp and 352Nm. It is paired with either a 6-speed manual or 8-speed auto and boasts start-stop technology for better fuel economy. Jeep will also offer a 2.0-liter turbo gasoline mill that’s good for 268hp and 400Nm of torque, mated to the 8-speed self-shifter.

What really makes this Jeep special is that it is a much lighter model than the outgoing JK. Jeep managed to cut some 91kg, utilizing a lighter frame and aluminum in places like the hood, doors, and windshield frame.

The new Jeep Wrangler is set to go on sale in the first quarter of 2018.
