Mercedes-Benz PH launches safer, more tech-loaded Actros heavy-duty truck

Mercedes-Benz' portfolio isn’t just about making luxury cars and stunning speed machines. It’s also in to manufacturing commercial vehicles like the Actros 3341, a 33-ton heavy-duty truck that has 410 hp on tap, hence the 3341 on its name.

That said, the brand’s official Philippine partner Auto Nation Group (ANG) recently launched the new Actros in an event held at the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga. There’s an important reason as to why ANG decided to hold the event there. That’s because the 2018 Mercedes-Benz Actros is now equipped with the brand’s Active Brake Assist 2 safety system. ANG deemed the venue as the ideal place to put the truck and its safety suit to the test.

But what is the Active Brake Assist all about, and why the number 2? To put it simple, the Active Brake Assist is Mercedes-Benz’ contribution to reducing the dangers of driving or being on the road with big trucks by improving the machines’ braking system.

It’s comprised of such features as active cruise control, anti-lock braking system, acceleration skid control, all-wheel disc brakes, electronically controlled braking system, high-pressure braking system, brake assist, lane assistant, roll control, proximity control, and more brake system-related safety technologies. All these are wired to the truck and are triggered via radar detection. The Active Brake Assist system works by detecting a potential collision between the Actros and a slow-moving vehicle up front at speeds of up to 80 km/h.

It does its magic by triggering the brake system to apply what’s called staged braking intervention, a technical jargon Mercedes-Benz uses to refer to the system’s ability to automatically decelerate the truck and apply short bursts of braking while sending the driver visual and audible warnings of a potential frontal hit.

If the driver fails to react on time, the system intervenes and applies full braking force. The aim is to allow the driver to still be in control and make evasive braking/steering inputs up until the system deems the situation too late for the driver to step on the brake pedal.

The Active Brake Assist 2 that’s fitted on the new Actros improves on that by detecting a stationary vehicle up front. This improved system also works as smoothly on bad weather conditions where water puddles, slippery roads, and poor road visibility are common challenges.

As techie as this system is, Mercedes-Benz says in all honesty that the Actros’ Active Brake Assist 2 will not always prevent accidents, and that the majority of saving lives and property on the road still rides on safe and responsible driving. In an essence, the system modernizes a truck’s safety feature, something the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is keen on pushing to include on its truck modernization program.

According to DOTr Assistant Secretary for Road Transport Mark Richmond de Leon, the agency’s truck modernization program will go hand-in-hand with its PUV modernization program. As regard, Mercedes-Benz’ Active Brake Assist 2 safety system will help move the program forward, and that he will help make the system (or any equivalent safety technologies) to become standard on all modern trucks here in the Philippines.

The Mercedes Benz Actros 3341 with Active Brake Assist System is priced at Php6.9M.
