Porsche has always been a strong force in the world of motorsport. It has won quite a number of titles in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) races, most notably its 19 victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. So it comes as a bit of a surprise that Porsche will be leaving the LMP1 class at the end of the 2017 season.
Motorsport fans need not be saddened, however, as the German carmaker did follow-up this announcement with a promise to enter the equally prestigious Formula E tilt at the start of the 2019 season. Apart from this, Porsche will continue to beef up its participation in the WEC’s GT class.
The Formula E bid is reflective of the marque’s Porsche Strategy 2025. This is a move that focuses on sustainability by coming up with GT cars and fully electric sports cars. The former comes in the form of the Porsche 911 RSR, which is currently being used in WEC. The latter, meanwhile, involves the creation of models like the battery-powered Mission E concept that was revealed a while back.
Porsche’s WEC bid, which involves further participation in Le Mans and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, will see Porsche put more effort into developing the 911 RSR and make it a force to reckon with. As for all-electric race known as Formula E, it is the brand’s way of fueling its passion for motorsport (no pun intended) while still keeping the environment in mind.
