Subaru’s motorsport and tuning arm, Subaru Technica International (STI) has been around for 30 years now. As it celebrates its 30th birthday this year, it unveils a special limited edition model known as the Type RA-R, which will be sold in its Japanese home market.

The anniversary model distinguishes itself from the regular WRX STI with its red stripe on the front grille, another one at the rear, and carbon fiber mirrors and roof. The outer mirrors also get a vortex generator. As for the wheels, these are 19-inchers.

Taking its cue from the principles of lightweight, speed, and enjoyment, Subaru took pains to make the car lighter by as much as 30kg compared to the S207 and S208. Apart from the lighter materials and weight reduction scheme, the tweaked FJ20 Boxer motor now pushes out 320hp. This promises even better response and acceleration.

Besides the engine, new dampers and springs, Brembo brakes, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires all conspire to give a more dynamic drive. It’s the complete WRX STI package, says Subaru.

But alas, the WRX STI Type RA-R will only be limited to 500 units. And you must live in Japan to get one.
