Toyota has been churning out taxicabs in various forms for quite some time now.  In Hong Kong, for instance, you see a whole city of early model Crowns, while we have the Vios as our means of metered transport. And the company has been making taxis for its Japanese home market since 1936 when the Model AA started it all. Now, it unveils its latest taxicab named JPN Taxi.

A quick look at the JPN Taxi reveals a tall, no-nonsense exterior that should pay off nicely in terms of passenger room. The front takes inspiration from the Crown, giving it a rather elegant presence. It even gets those fender-mounted side mirrors that give it a 70s retro vibe. The higher-spec Takumi variant even gets LED lighting on the D-pillars.

Stepping inside the wide sliding doors reveals a comfy-looking space that can take in all types of passengers. This includes wheelchair-bound folks who will find the tall ceiling and large seats more than adequate for their needs.  Apart from these, the JPN Taxi comes with air purifiers to clean cabin air, LED lighting for convenience, as well as rear air vents and heated rear seats for the top-spec models.

What makes this taxi promising, Toyota claims, is the comfort is provides. Extensive use of sound-deadening materials, along with large windows help ensure a stress-free ride. Plus, six airbags and Toyota Safety Sense C provide protection for all occupants—something that many could learn a thing or two from.

The JPN Taxi will be powered by a 1.5-liter motor that can run on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). Tuned more for fuel efficiency, Toyota claims it can go up to 19.4kms/L.

The JPN Taxi is now available to order in either Nagomi or Takumi trim levels. Expect to see it plying the roads of the Land of the Rising Sun real soon.
