The Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury Burs the Line Between Sedan and SUV

Mercedes-Maybach is best known for its ultra-luxury sedans and limousines. But with the seemingly unstoppable influx of SUVs and crossovers, it would seem that the luxury marque would soon succumb to market demand. Well, it looks like it just might. That is, if the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept is any indication.

Unveiled at Auto China 2018 in Bejing, the concept looks a bit odd at first glance. Up front, it’s got the requisite large chrome grille that is usually expected of cars of this caliber. Yet moving over to the side, the eye and mind suddenly find themselves a bit confused as to what exactly they are looking at. Is it an SUV? Or is it a sedan? Actually, it’s a little of both.

You see, the raised ride height makes you believe it is an SUV—until you see the trunklid at the rear. It’s essentially meant to cater to two of the largest market segments in China. Mercedes-Maybach wants to show that it is thinking about clients who want a crossover. Yet it still will not forget its main target customer—the sedan buyer.

This is where the opulent cabin comes into play. The seats are covered in Crystal White leather. There are likewise rose gold accents all around. And the rear occupants get a large center console with a tea set that can even keep the drinks warm. Up front, the driver gets a pair of 12.3-inch displays for instrumentation and infotainment.

Powering the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury are four electric motors that put out 738hp. With power sent to all four wheels via permanent all-wheel drive, the car can travel up to 322kms on s single charge. It can even go as far as 90kms after being topped up using a fast charger for just 5 minutes.

At present, however, the Vision Ultimate Luxury is merely a concept. A showcar to let the world in on what the future could hold for the luxury market.
