For quite some time now, Volvo Cars has been pushing initiatives to electrify its vehicle lineup. The Swedish car company announced that it will begin electrification by the year 2019. And it seems like its efforts are paying off, as it has been recognized by the United Nations no less.
Volvo Cars’ electrification strategy has been cited by the world body in its latest United Nations Global Compact. The largest corporate initiative focuses on the moves made by Global Compact members in pushing for the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Announced at the recent high-level meeting held in New York, Volvo was one of the companies recognized for being a LEAD member. Out of the 9,500 members companies, Volvo is among the 44 LEAD companies, as well as one of two automakers.
The UN report cited Volvo’s electrification strategy for its boldness. It notes that the car company fully embraced electrification and isn’t just treating it as a trend or an afterthought. Volvo will even be introducing five electrified vehicles between 2019 and 2021. Three of these will be Volvos, while the other two will come from its subsidiary, Polestar.
Apart from this, Volvo will also be fielding an electric or hybrid variant for each of its vehicles. With this, it hopes to give the market clean and safe offerings that can be used as everyday cars.
