As redundant and cliché as it sounds to most car enthusiasts, Volvo has long been regarded as a pioneer and leader in the field of automotive safety. The Swedish carmaker has practically built a reputation around this hallmark. And now, it has the Euro New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) to back up this claim.
Euro NCAP recently recognized the Volvo S90 and its V90 wagon sibling for scoring a perfect six points in the Autonomous Emergency Braking for Pedestrians tests conducted by the organization. The models are the first cars to ever score a perfect mark in this test. Apart from this, the two nameplates also garnered a five-star rating in crash protection.
This follows the equally stellar performance of the XC90, which got the same score in the Autonomous Emergency Braking for Car to Car tests. This makes it the safest SUV on the road today. And together with its 90-series sedan and wagon stablemates, the three Volvos are practically the safest cars on the planet to date.
The Autonomous Emergency Braking system is part of Volvo’s continuing quest to make its cars and the roads they travel on a truly safe place to be. It is an evolution of the City Safety system, which was first seen on the Volvo XC60 almost a decade ago. Since then, City Safety has gone to include pedestrians in the “obstacles” and road hazards it detects, taking appropriate action to avoid an accident (or lessen its impact, should it occur).
But as we all know, City Safety and Autonomous Emergency Braking are just a couple of features of Volvo’s comprehensive suite of safety gear. It’s all part of Volvo’s vision that no one gets killed or seriously injured in a Volvo by the year 2020. And with the latest accolades from the Euro NCAP, it looks like it is truly on its way to achieving its noble dream.
