The year 2016 gave Porsche AG a lot of reason to celebrate. For one, global sales were up by 6%, hitting a whopping 237,778 units sold. Yes, it may be a sports car maker, yet it is truly a popular choice.
This was no surprise, what with excellent models and an enthusiastic dealer network pushing its offerings out of the door, Porsche had nowhere to go but up. Leading the charge was the best-selling Macan, with 95,642 examples leaving dealerships. This was a 19% rise over the previous year. It was complemented by the 718 Boxster, with 12,848 copies sold—a 9% jump. Despite its being the more affordable among the lineup, it still gives buyers a true taste of the Porsche brand without any compromises.
And of course, Porsche wouldn’t be what it is without the legendary 911. This cult classic saw sales grow by 2% to 32,409 911s in 2016. Yes, the fire is definitely alive.
And who have been buying Porsches, you wonder? The Europeans are still the top Porsche fans, with 78,975 vehicles sold, or a 5% increase. The Chinese market came in second, with 65,248 Porsches sold in that country—a staggering 12% growth. And the USA took third place, with 54,280 units, for a 5% jump over 2015.
With the arrival of the Panamera Sport Turismo—the four-door sports car’s Shooting Brake kin—set to arrive in March at the Geneva Motor Show, it looks like more Porsches will hit the world’s roads in 2017.
