Pickup trucks have always been considered as workhorses for the working class. The ride was harsh and the looks were as bland as saltless food. Today, however, pickups have become a lifestyle vehicle. People from all walks of life have started to take notice of their now-stylish lines that likewise possess that tough, carry-all attitude.

The worldwide truck market has become so successful that even luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz has just unveiled its very own work, err, truck, the X-Class concept. While the world first got wind of the planned vehicle a couple of years back, many were hoping that it wouldn’t come to pass. Unfortunately for these folks, their worst nightmare has come true.

Yet the Mercedes-Benz X-Class isn’t half bad. In fact, it is actually the Mercedes-Benz of pickups—literally and figuratively. With two flavors to choose from, one can go for either the sporty or rugged side of Mercedes.

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class Stylish Explorer is the sporty one with SUV looks to match. The front fascia, for instance, is an evolution of the signature Merc SUV family face, with flared wheel arches, classic apron, powerdome-topped hood, and extended headlamps. The look is finished off with 22-inch alloys that fill those large wheel wells nicely.

The Powerful Adventurer X-Class concept, on the other hand, is a stark contrast to the White Metallic Stylish Explorer. The Lemonax metallic hue complements the tough, rugged, off-road capable vibe with touches like huge 35x11.5 tires, a 1.9m height, and other bits that exude a macho stance. This is matched by front and rear overriders, body cladding, and matte wheel arches. Finally, an electric winch and tow hook ensure that you won’t get stuck even if you’re in the middle of nowhere.

Either way, occupants will still feel the luxury of a Mercedes in the cozy and stylish interior. The traditional round air vents, central display, COMMAND controller, and multifunction touchpad all come together to keep passengers cool and connected. This includes gadgets like the latest Mercedes Me connectivity platform.

To get to know what its customers want in a pickup truck, Mercedes-Benz focused on different target markets. Everyone from families, business people, adventurers, and even cattle ranchers were asked what they would like to see from a truck—one with the three-pointed star at that. The result is the X-Class.

At present, it is still a concept. Production will begin in 2017 and wil be made under the guise of Mercedes.Benz Vans.
