With around 14 million copies sold to date, the Volkswagen Polo is considered as one of the German brand’s most successful models. The little VW has allowed numerous folks to have an entry point into the prestigious German marque. And now, it continues this with a truly innovative sixth-generation model.
The latest-generation Volkswagen Polo was recently unveiled in Berlin and brings to the table a whole host of new technologies that were previously seen only on more high-end models. For one thing, the car is now bigger, translating to more passenger and cargo volume inside. The latter, for instance, is now up from 280 to 351 liters.
Then there are the various driver assistance systems that come as either standard or optional extras. Adaptive cruise control can be had at up to speeds of 210ph. Blind Spot Detection Lane Change alert, as well as Keyless Acess for both locking and startup, and Park Assist are now part of the options pack. And even the base Tendline models get goodies like coming-home and leaving-home lighting assistance, Front Assist, and speed limiter, just to name a few.
While it may be an entry-level subcompact, Volkswagen has seen fit to equip the Polo with cutting-edge tech like the Active Info Display and the latest in infotainment systems. The former, previously seen on high-end nameplates like the Passat, allows for customizable info displays and takes the strain out of driving via a clear instrument cluster. The latter, meanwhile, allows easy connectivity of mobile devices and uses a bright interface that is sized anywhere from 6.5- to 8 inches.
At launch, the Polo will be available with a range of Euro-6 gasoline and diesel engines, with outputs ranging from 65 to 150hp. A natural gas option, the Polo TGI, will likewise be on offer with 90hp. Each one of these motors will come with start/stop and regenerative braking. And a dual-clutch gearbox will be available to transfer power to the drive wheels.
The all-new Volkswagen Polo will be offered in either Trendline, Comfortline, or Highline trim levels. Buyers can even opt for the Polo Beats with its 300-watt audi system. Or, the top-spec Polo GTI will dish out 200hp for the truly sporty set.
