If you’ve ever wondered what a future Mini Cooper would look like, then maybe the MINI's Electric Concept could give a bit of a clue. Set to appear at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show in September, it is a preview of things to come for the iconic British brand.
The Electric Concept, MINI says, is designed primarily to be an urban runabout, used for short distances and within crowded city streets. The small three-door layout means ease of weaving in and around tight spaces while still offering the trademark go-kart handling. In short, it’s a Mini for the city.
Being a MINI, however, means that it doesn’t lack style. The signature profile is intact. In fact, you wouldn’t mistake this car for anything else. It is even finished in a distinct silver hue with yellow accents.
Giving it more character is the front fascia with a grille-less design that is both chic and functional. Since there is no engine to cool, the design team had the freedom to use such a treatment, which likewise helps cut wind drag. Then there is the smooth-looking rear diffuser that can be rendered as a whole due to the lack of tailpipes (again, because it doesn’t need it)
Moving over to the side, one immediately spots the uniquely-styled 19-inch wheels. MINI boasts that these employ the latest 3D printed manufacturing techniques. And the chunky side skirts are made entirely of fiberglass to cut down on precious kilos.
The look is finished off by a cool set of taillights. A close look reveals that they are set in the design of the Union Jack, with each side representing each half of the British flag.
As of press time, MINI has not revealed any details about powertrain and the like. Yet the name does suggest that this car will be clean and green once it enters production. It can be recalled that Mini announced that it would unveil a purely electric vehicle come 2018. The MINI Electric Concept could most likely be it. We’ll let you know once it happens.
