Mercedes-Maybach is best known for its ultra-luxury sedans and limousines. But with the seemingly unstoppable influx of SUVs and crossovers, it would seem that the luxury marque would soon succumb to market demand. Well, it looks like it just might. That is, if the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept is any indication.
Unveiled at Auto China 2018 in Bejing, the concept looks a bit odd at first glance. Up front, it’s got the requisite large chrome grille that is usually expected of cars of this caliber. Yet moving over to the side, the eye and mind suddenly find themselves a bit confused as to what exactly they are looking at. Is it an SUV? Or is it a sedan? Actually, it’s a little of both.
You see, the raised ride height makes you believe it is an SUV—until you see the trunklid at the rear. It’s essentially meant to cater to two of the largest market segments in China. Mercedes-Maybach wants to show that it is thinking about clients who want a crossover. Yet it still will not forget its main target customer—the sedan buyer.
