The Ferrari speedster—an open top number that was usually built for the track. It was often a single-seater with no windshield and was  as minimalist as possible to save weight and optimize speed. Ferrari brings back this vaunted type of vehicle, this time for road use in the form of not just one but two speedsters. Enter the Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2.

Named after one of the most famous tracks in its Italian home, the 812 Superfast-based Monza SP1 and SP2 are a pair of limited-run offerings under the new Icona Series. And when Ferrari says special edition model, we can be sure that there really is an extra something waiting for the few who will be lucky enough to own one  of these awesome machines.

That something special in this case is a 6.5-liter V12 motor that puts out 809hp, which the Prancing Horse claims, is its most powerful mill to date. This will allow the speedster twins to rocket from 0-100kph in just 2.9 seconds, hit 200kph from rest in 7.9 ticks, and attain a top  speed way in excess of 300kph.

Ferrari faithful may note that this is nothing new as other nameplates can do the same. Sure, but none of them do so while subjecting their occupant to the elements head-on (or face-on, in this case). Yes, the SP1 and SP2 have no windshield which means passengers will experience what it’s like piloting cars such as Formula 1 racers. This time, however, they’ll be able to do so out on the open road.

While this car is best enjoyed at full tilt on the track, it is perfectly road legal. And in case you’re wondering what the difference is between the SP1 and SP2, it’s all down to the number of seats. As the name suggests, the Monza SP1 is a single seat speedster while the SP2 is, well, for two people.

As mentioned above, the Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 will only be offered in limited quantities.
