The local government of Quezon City, headed by Mayor Joy Belmonte, has partnered with online currier service provider Lalamove, to come up with a way to help QC-based jeepney drivers earn in the midst of this COVD-19 pandemic. It’s called “LalaJeep”, and it makes use of the services of jeepney drivers and their trusty rides.
LalaJeep’s goal is to help jeepney drivers who were displaced from work due to the community quarantine. This will also provide more affordable options for business owners who are heavily reliant on the delivery app as they move essential goods and shift their business online and delivery-enabled to adapt to the new norm.
From June 15 until the end of July, customers will see LalaJeep as a new delivery type on the Lalamove app. It falls just in between the motorcycle and the 300kg delivery services, ensuring that it will be affordable for anyone to avail. During the project, LalaJeep will only be available in Quezon City.
The QC govt. facilitated the group training sessions for their jeepney driver constituents, helping them to easily onboard to the delivery app. During the preparation of the launch, around 200 jeepney drivers signed up to be part of the LalaJeep fleet.
With LalaJeep, the QC government now has a step above in terms of fighting back and gaining the economic losses brought by COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown. Here’s to hoping that the rest of the Metro Manila local governments and beyond would follow suit. This is a great hep in many ways for those who run small-to-medium business enterprises, as well as the hundreds PUV drivers who have been stripped off their daily earnings.
