PACE Stretches the Legs of Their Fine Steeds in the Tour de Cebu

There is this notion that old cars are better left in the garage or used only on Sundays. Travelling long distances with these beauties is usually a no-no. For the guys of the Performance And Classics Enthusiasts (PACE) Club of Cebu, however, this is definitely not the case.

These gentlemen, who own one of the largest collection of classic and supercars to roam Philippine roads, regularly come together to let their steeds loose and to go out and play. And recently, they gathered for the Tour de Cebu, a Mille Miglia-inspired rally that is a test of both man and machine. The event, which took place last October 14-16, 2016 saw the forty participants race from Cebu, around Bohol, and back to Cebu is a grueling 1,000km run.

Co-organized by the Manila Sports Car Club and Tradeshow International (the team behind events like Trans Sport Show, Manila Auto Salon, and the Philippine International Motor Show), the race flagged off at the SM Seaside Cebu. The group then headed for the Bohol BE Grand Resort, and finally capped things off at Cebu Chateau de Busay.

Unlike most events, however, this race wasn’t about speed. On the contrary, it was an “on time” rally that gave more importance to how closely one would arrive at the finish line at a pre-determined time. Those who came early or late got corresponding penalties. The winner was the team who got the lowest penalty.

Such a format means both driver and navigator needed to work closely to plot the best route, avoid unnecessary detours and stops, and the like. Moreover, the rally was a chance for everyone to simply soak up the scenery and their prized rides. And with cars and country roads like these, we can’t blame them for doing this—for the second time around.
