The Volkswagen Tiguan is arguably one very popular SUV. Since its launch around a decade ago, VW says that it has sold an average of 500,000 units each year. And that was just for the first-gen model. Last year, the German car brand brought out the all-new iteration, which is sleeker and more modern.
Apparently, Volkswagen was just whetting our appetites. Turns out that it actually planned to release another variant of its premium midsize SUV, this time offering more space and versatility to win a larger audience. Enter the all-new Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace.
Longer by some 215mm, with a 100mm jump in wheelbase length over its “classic” brother, the Tiguan Allspace gives buyers the option of a 5+2 seating configuration. Besides the flexible seating, VW claims 760L of cargo volume can be had, with this extending to 1,920L with the two rows of seats folded and the loading bay filled up to the roof.
Folks thinking that this is merely a cut-and-paste job, with VW simply extending the wheelbase, can relax. Volkswagen says that it actually developed the classic and Allspace variants at the same time. This means they share the same engineering and design cues, with neither one being an afterthought. What differentiates the two, apart from the obvious, are the higher hood, and various other styling cues that match the larger proportions. All Tiguan Allspace models likewise come with granite grey underbody protection, useful when off-roading.
Moreover, the Tiguan Allspace comes with a choice of two front sections—the on-road and off-road fascias. Just like tis classic sibling, the off-road package adds underbody protection and other bits that don’t just look good but are functional as well. The underbody protector that extends to the bumper, for instance, improves the approach angle by approximately 7 degrees. Plus, the newly-designed roof gets structural lines—a nod to classic SUVs. These give the Allspace a truly masculine look.
The new VW Tiguan Allspace will come with a slew of gasoline and diesel engines. All equipped with turbocharging, the TSI gas motors have power outputs ranging from 150hp, 180hp, and 220hp. The TDI diesel triplet, meanwhile, can be had in either 150hp, 190hp, or 240hp. The latter set of mills also come with an SCR catalytic converter and 12-liter AdBlue tank—both of which are designed to lessen nitrogen oxide emissions.
Each motor can be hooked up to VW’s DSG transmission and 4Motion Active all-wheel drive system. The latter allows drivers to choose between Onroad, Snow, Offroad, and Offroad Individual. It’s the best way to customize the Tiguan to suit one’s driving style.
Needless to say, the new Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace, which is the US market Atlas’s European counterpart, comes with the latest creature comfort, connectivity, and safety features. Everything from LED lighting, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, to Pedestrian Monitoring and other driver assistance systems are standard or optional extras.
The all-new Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace will premiere at the Geneva Motor Show next week.
