In the future, one will be able to get into a car and easily find their preferred settings in a few simple clicks. Everything from radio station to seat adjustments will be tailor-made to their liking. And this can even be done for rental cars.

No, it isn’t accomplished by tedious fiddling with the controls but by one’s smartphone. And no, it isn’t science fiction, or so Volkswagen wants to think so. The German carmaker will be unveiling its latest in-car customization and connectivity app, known as the Volkswagen User ID, at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

CES, which will run from January 5-8, 2017, will showcase the latest, as well as future technologies in electronics, gadgets, and even automobiles. And yes, the VW User ID is just one of the cool toys visitors can play with at the event.

The smartphone app will allow VW owners to create a profile, along with the ability to input their various preferences for their VW vehicle. Once this is done, they can seamlessly customize any VW model with their desired seat adjustment, in-vehicle display screen, ambient lighting, and other vehicle functions. All they need to do is step into the car and voila!

The VW User ID is all part of the German carmaker’s vision of unifying human, vehicle, and surroundings into one single ecosystem. Each one becomes a part of the other. Thus, a vehicle pretty much becomes a part of one’s environment—a true extension of one’s personality, so to speak.

Visitors lucky enough to attend the show can experience the VW User ID at the Volkswagen stand. Those who can’t make it, though, need not worry as the app can now be downloaded at the App Store for iOS and Google Play for Android. Yes, the future of motoring is truly upon us.
