The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Boasts Modern Touches Underneath an Iconic Shape

To most onlookers, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class may look like the same car that the brand launched almost 40 years ago. Yet the German luxury car company assures everyone that this is an all-new model.

And this is the appeal of this model. It has stayed true to the shape that has made it an icon on just about any road it has traveled. The boxy profile is instantly recognizable from a mile away. It projects an image of power that befits the three-pointed star up front.

Mercedes-Benz says that this Gelandewagen is longer, wider, and taller. New headlamps and taillights, side blinkers, and other subtle details help distinguish this new one from previous iterations. And yes, there are a host of smoother surfaces on various parts of the vehicle.

Inside, the added girth pays off in terms of added space. There is a lot more rear seat legroom—perfect for those that prefer to be chauffeured around. Plus, the new dashboard is a lot more modern, along with  a host of connectivity options for the mobile lifestyle set.

Just like its flanks, the 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 remains. It still puts out 416hp, this time coursed to the drive wheels via 9-speed automatic gearbox. Mercedes even throws in a few modern touches such as an electromechanical rack-and-pinion steering system in place of the ancient recirculating ball setup, along with the Dynamic Select drive mode system.

The former gives the car better on-road manners with a more direct steering feel, while the latter allows the driver to switch between driving modes to suit one’s style. One can choose between Comfort, Sport, Eco, and Individual. There is also a new G-Mode that switches on when one of the differentials is activated or when low range is selected. This is, after all, still a mountain goat with a three-pointed star badge.

Speaking of off-roading, Mercedes-Benz also says that approach, departure, and break-over angles have been improved. Fording depth has likewise been increased. In short, the mod cons thrown in are just icing on this truly capable off-roader of a cake.

The new Mercedes-Benz G-Class will have its market launch later this year.
