When one thinks of Harley-Davidson, the immediate image that usually comes to mind is that of a big bike with a rip-roaring engine. This is often accompanied by scenes of leather-clad riders cruising down a long stretch of highway, eating up the miles without a care in the world.
Apparently, Harley-Davidson does care, specifically for the environment. This is according to a report by the motorcycle maker in its 4th quarter 2017 financial report that was submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that says that it is set to come out with its very first electric bike. The said offering could be out in as early as 18 months.
Insiders will note that news of Harley-Davidson coming out with an electric motorbike is nothing new. As early as 2014, it had conducted an “experiment” in the form of Project Livewire, a tour across the U.S. and Europe that featured some 40 custom-made electric two-wheelers. Moreover, the various crises that the company had been through after stocks fell on several occasions can also be considered as a catalyst for the said move.
But the biggest reason is arguably Harley-Davidson’s aging market base. Its usual clients, whether they admit or not, are moving past their prime. And so it is time to capture the hearts of a younger generation. To do this, one of the strategies is to roll out clean burning or even zero-emissions motorcycles.
So, are you ready for an electric Harley?
