With this year’s Formula One (F1) almost wrapping up, Red Bull Racing (RBR) is already looking to level up its competitive edge. Case in point, it recently announced its F1 title and innovations partnership with Aston Martin, thus giving birth to Aston Martin Red Bull Racing which will spread its wings in 2018.

Aston Martin had its last outing in F1 back in the ‘50s. It has since then gave its attention to other forms of motor sport, most recently in the 2017 Le Mans 24-Hour race where it claimed the coveted GTE Pro title. Its partnership with RBR marks its historic return to F1, but the best part about it is what’s been happening between the 2 companies since last year.

In review, Aston Martin and RBR created the Valkyrie in 2016. It’s the British carmaker’s take on a hypercar that it pegged would go up against models from such brands as Ferrari, McLaren, and Porsche.

Following that was a year of cool innovations leading to an eventual 2018 F1 season partnership. In addition, RBR says that it’s eying Aston Martin as its new F1 engine supplier in 2019, a move which would further solidify the already well-established partnership.

According to Aston Martin President and CEO Andy palmer, “The power unit discussions are of interest to us but only if the circumstances are right. We are not about to enter an engine war with no restrictions in cost or dynamometer hours but we believe that if the FIA can create the right environment we would be interested in getting involved.”

But Aston Martin and RBR’s teamwork doesn’t stop there. In line with their mission to dominate F1 next year is the completion of the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Advanced Performance Center in Milton Keynes, England. Set to be fully operational later this year, the said innovations center will help Aston Martin Red Bull Racing create new techs that would beef up its F1 racing career. These new techs, in turn, will be adapted into Aston Martin’s future production models.

“Our Innovation Partnership with Aston Martin has been a pioneering project from day one. Having conceived and created the remarkably successful Valkyrie together in 2016, we extended our relationship this year and are now delighted to further strengthen the Partnership and see the team competing as Aston Martin Red Bull Racing in 2018. In addition, more than 100 Aston Martin staff will service the new Advanced Performance Centre on our campus here in Milton Keynes and it will allow us to collaborate further with Aston Martin on special, equally innovative, new projects,” said RBR Team Principal Christian Horner.
