Whether they admit it or not, a lot of people tend to think that Mazda is a small automotive firm. Sure, it may not exactly be as massive as Toyota but it can definitely hold its own. In fact, it recently announced that it has produced its 50 millionth vehicle.

Yes, the Hiroshima-based car company has churned out 50 million vehicles. This milestone was reached last May 15th at its Hofu, Japan plant. The affair was celebrated by a ceremony attended by top company officials.

Looking back, Mazda began producing vehicles as far back as 1931 when the very first three-wheeled truck rolled off the assembly line in Japan. It eventually entered automotive production in 1960 with the R360 Coupe, a micro-mini model that paved the way for the brand coming up with some of the most engaging cars in the business.

Soon after, the likes of the rotary-engined RX-7 came along, followed by models like the iconic MX-5 Miata. Today it is the Skyactiv models that give it worldwide acclaim. This year, Mazda plans to roll out 1,660,000 cars from both its Hofu and Hiroshima factories. While this is a large number, the marque is not about to rest on its laurels.

On the contrary, Mazda plans to embark on an ambitious journey that will see it producing some 2 million cars a year by fiscal year 2024. Moreover, it aims to establish a world where cars co-exist with society and the planet in total harmony. This is the reason why it is hard at work on such tech as Skyactiv-X that won’t do away with the internal combustion engine, as most carmakers are doing. Rather, it will try and make the mill as clean as possible in order to provide a fun time behind the wheel while still caring for society and the earth.

With this goal, it seems that Mazda is on its way to 50 million more vehicles. And beyond.
