Folks trolling the web and looking at upcoming vehicles may have noticed a spy shot or two of the newest addition to the BMW Sports Activity Vehicle lineup. Well, the BMW X2 is here and yes, it slots right in between the X1 and the larger X3.

So why create a new X-vehicle, you ask? Well, because it can. It may appeal to those folks looking for a small, sporty yet still fairly practical offering to get them through the daily grind and be that weekend warrior that stows a fair amount of their gear.

While the look is typical BMW SAV, with its trademark twin kidney grille, muscular fenders, and taut rear, the German luxury carmaker throws in LED units for the headlights, side skirts, and a rear spoiler. These add to the youthful vibe.

Just like the outside, the cabin gets the BMW business-like touch, with all controls where they should be. As with all BMW SAVs, the rear seats fold flat to add to the adequately-sized cargo hold. Yes, this thing was built for the active set, so BMW claims.

This active lifestyle persona can also be seen in the choice of engine offered. At aunch, the X22 will be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with BMW TwinPower. This is good for 228hp and 350Nm, coursed to the xDrive all-wheel drive system via 8-speed Steptronic gearbox. This allows it to scoot from rest to 100kph in 6.3 seconds.  And yes, the all-wheel drive system can be had with Hill Descent Control to aid downhill crawls if the owner so chooses.

This being a modern-day BMW, connected car tech is naturally part of the mix. The free-standing infotainment touchscreen comes in either 6.5- or 8.8-inches and lets one manipulate various functions, along with the chance to utilize Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. One can even connect their devices to the net via the vehicle’s Wi-Fi hotspot.

BMW will also be offering an X2 M Sport X version that adds stiffer springs, 20-inch wheels, and a lower ride height. It is obviously aimed at buyers who want the M badge but have kids or a somewhat active lifestyle.

The BMW X2 will be available by the second quarter of 2018.
