The 45th Tokyo Motor Show: A Celebration of Mobility That Goes Beyond the Motor

It’s no secret that the Big Guns are usually the stars at the eagerly-awaited Tokyo Motor Show. We refer, of course, the brands like Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Mazda. Yet the 45th Tokyo Motor Show wasn’t just about these marques as it was more about mobility itself.

In fact, the theme for this year’s staging says it all: Beyond the Motor. This can be seen in the slew of technologies that showcase how mobility is changing. And we’re not just talking about new powertrain options like electric vehicles, fuel cell hydrogen power, and the like. We also saw a slew of Artificial Intelligence technologies. It seems like each player had its own version the tech. The goal is to make cars so intelligent that they help make driving much easier and safer.

And while AI and alternative energy are fast becoming the norm for tomorrow’s vehicles, carmakers have not forgotten about the joy of driving. On the contrary, these powertrains and brainy systems are being designed to enhance rather than deprive drivers of the joy of being behind the wheel.  They are designed not only to increase the margin of safety but more importantly, to make driving even more pleasurable.

And this can be seen not only in offerings from the big boys but also in cars from the likes of Suzuki and Isuzu, with their trucks and commercial vehicles. Yes, it promises to be a safer and more enjoyable road network for all.

Speaking of which, the Tokyo Motor Show wasn’t just for the Japanese carmakers. Sure, it’s their home turf. Yet this was also a place to see the latest from the Europeans, such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, and Porsche.  Yes, the show caters to everyone who loves cars, no matter what country they hail from. After all, this is what the show is about.

Beyond the Motor is a clear message that while we look for ways to make driving safer, along with solutions and technologies to help preserve our environment, we will still be able to experience the joy of mobility. We will, in fact, become more mobile and be able to do so with a cleaner conscience.

The 45th Tokyo Motor Show runs from October 25 to November 5, 2017 at Tokyo Big Sight.
