The Mazda brand has built its reputation around making fun to drive cars. Even everyday offerings like the little Mazda2 subcompact or the CX-5 compact SUV have been known to provide a responsive and fun-filled time behind the wheel.
Yet not many folks are aware that the Hiroshima-based carmaker also has a frugal side. Mazda vehicles have also been considered as some of the most fuel efficient in the business. And no less than the United States Environmental Protection Agency backs this claim.
The US EPA recognized Mazda as the most efficient brand for the fifth straight year, according to the latest edition of its annual Light-Duty Automotive Technology, Carbon Dioxide Emissions, and Fuel Economy Trends report that came out just this month.
Mazda scored the highest adjusted fuel economy among the 13 brands in the auto industry. Mazda vehicles averaged 12.58km/L in the combined city and highway cycle. It also emitted just 187g/km of carbon dioxide (CO2. And as mentioned, Mazda has managed to achieve this for the fifth consecutive year.
All this is due to the marque’s vaunted Skyactiv suite of vehicle technologies. The lightweight engine, transmission, chassis, and body all combine to provide a fun to drive experience while still being frugal at the gas pump, as shown by the EPA report. What\s equally amazing is that Mazda doesn’t have a hybrid, plug-in electric, or fuel cell vehicle in its lineup.
This is a reaffirmation of Mazda’s commitment to bring out the best in current technologies like the internal combustion engine—something which Mazda aims to keep using in the years to come.
