Goodbye FJ, Hello TJ Cruiser: Toyota to Unveil Fun and Utilitarian Sport Utility. Err, Van

Quite a number of car enthusiasts were saddened by the news of the Toyota FJ Cruiser’s demise. Fans need not fret, however, as the Japanese carmaker is not about ti kill the Cruiser nameplate just yet. At least this is the impression we’re getting as it will unveil the Toyota TJ Cruiser at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show this October.

Before you jump for joy, best to note that the new TJ Cruiser is a “new van and SUV fusion genre”. In fact, the name alone connotes several things about the vehicle. The T stands for toolbox, referring to the utilitarian capabilities of this van. The J is short for driving, letting us know that it will provide a bit of fun behind the wheel. And Cruiser is naturally associated with the marque’s long-standing SUV heritage.

That description may fool you into thinking that the TJ Cruiser is some kind of a Frankenstein vehicle. On the contrary, Toyota managed to fuse the two vehicle types into one bold package. The front end is characterized by an imposing grille and fascia. The side, meanwhile, mixes the traditional van sliding doors with muscular fender flares. And the rear houses large opening doors that allow easy access for large and long objects.

While the shape may remind you of a box on wheels, it actually serves to give the vehicle lots of space inside. Despite measuring a tidy 4,300mm x 1,775mm x 1,620mm (length, width, and height), Toyota says the boxy profile and clever packaging will allow owners to load bikes or surfboards measuring up to 3m in length.

The seats can be folded or reclined, while tie-down hooks help secure precious items. The seat cushions, meanwhile, can be folded forward to provide a space for groceries. Outside, the roof, hood, and fenders are made of specially-coated materials that are scratch-resistant—perfect for those times when you’d want to trek off the beaten path.

And treading off-road the TJ Cruiser can, says Toyota. It will be powered by a 2.0-liter hybrid motor that will drive either the front or all four wheels. And those wheels are SUV-type rubber for all-weather and all-terrain capability.

Get to see how the Toyota TJ Cruiser can help you mix work and play whenever you wish. It will be unveiled at this year’s 45th Tokyo Motor Show, happening from October 25 to November 5, 2017 at Tokyo Big Sight.
