Volvo Cars has had a long-standing love affair with the station wagon. Since the Swedish brand’s early days, it has been offering buyers versatility and practically while still giving them the peace of mind that comes from driving a Volvo. This continues with the unveiling of the latest-generation Volvo V60.

The premium wagon in the 60 Series range sports the premium looks that are now a Volvo signature. Shared with the XC60 and 90 Series models, the new wagon also uses the brand’s vaunted Scalable Product Architecture. This is a first for the premium midsize class.

Launched at a rather unconventional venue—a Swedish family’s very own driveway--, the event emphasizes who the car’s target customer is—the family. It is aimed at families looking for a safe yet comfortable vehicle that can be used for the everyday commute or the weekend out of town trip.

Buyers can choose from host of engines that range from the T5 and T6 for gasoline, D3 and D4 for diesel, or a pair of plug-in hybrid variants. The T6 Twin Engine model puts out 340hp while its T8 Twin Engine counterpart produces a total system output of 390hp.

Just like all new Volvos, this one boasts of Sensus infotainment and vehicle connectivity system. Using a large tablet-style interface, users can control various vehicle functions as well as connect to the outside world while on the move.

And being a Volvo, the new V60 comes with safety gear such as City Safety that now detects pedestrians, cyclists, and animals, Pilot Assist that can control the steering and accelerator up to speeds of 130kph, Run-off Road Mitigation, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, and other driver-assist systems that will help one keep out of harm’s way.

And in a first for the segment, Volvo will be offering customers the option to access the new V60 via Volvo Care. This is a premium subscription service that allows clients to subscribe for the use of the V60 through a monthly flat rate. It frees one from the hassles of ownership while still allowing them to experience using the vehicle.

The Volvo V60 is now available to order. Deliveries will begin within the year.
