Lexus Stretches the RX and Throws in a Third-Row Seat

If you’ve been following the automotive beat lately (and hopefully, this website), you may have noticed a sudden surge of three-row SUVs from various carmakers. Subaru just unveiled the Ascent, while every other automaker is scrambling to field its own model in the ring. The latest one to do so is Lexus, with its RX L, debuting at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

While it may look like a standard latest-generation RX, the RX L sports an extended rear end and a slightly more upright back window. Both changes make for more room for an additional third-row seat. The last row of seats can accommodate two passengers comfortably even on long journeys. As to how large these people are remains to be seen, of course.

As for cargo-carrying capacity, Lexus claims that this is class-leading. It has also thrown in a power-fold feature to easily stow the third-row in the floor when added space is required. And one can easily pop the tailgate via hands-free mechanism.

Speaking of space, the RX L can be had in either standard 7-passenger layout or 6-passenger configuration. The two captain’s seats come standard on the 450hL and are optional on the 350L variant. Either way, one gets a host of comfort, convenience, and safety kit that make life easier and safer while on the move.

Power comes from either the 3.5-liter V6 that’s good for 290hp and 356Nm on the RX 350L, or the RX 450hL’s gasoline-electric hybrid system that produces a combined 308 horses. All-wheel drive is standard on the latter and optional on the former.
