Mazda gives the MX-5 more power and tech

Mazda has been known to give its offerings a subtle tweak every now and then. The latest one to receive an update is the MX-5. And this time, the upgrades are under the hood.

No, they haven’t thrown in a rocket just yet. What the Hiroshima-based company has done is increase horsepower for the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G mill. From a modest 158hp, the motor now puts out 182hp. Torque has likewise ben upped to 205Nm from 198Nm.

While no performance figures have been given, Mazda does promise less throttle lag and better overall response. Aside from tweaking the engine, the wheels now get a darker shade for a more mature yet sporty look. And the MX-5 likewise receives safety tech such as pedestrian and vehicle detection, traffic sign recognition, a rearview camera, and driver attention alert system.

All told, the updated MX-5 is meant to increase the overall desirability of an offering that has already gained a cult-like following.
