The Mercedes-Benz B-Class goes high-tech, with sleeker styling to boot

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class has always been one of those cars that puts practicality over everything else. Sure, it’s stylish in a Merc kind of way. Yet it is usually seen as being nothing more than a functional mini MPV with the three-pointed star.

While that’s not exactly a bad thing, Mercedes-Benz wants to change this as it equips the new-generation B-Class with cutting-edge tech and wraps it in a svelte bodyshell. Debuting at this year’s Paris Motor Show, the new B looks to the future while retaining what people love about it—its versatility.

Yes, it is still a multipurpose vehicle. Yet this time, it sports sharper lines and styling details, such as new headlights, grille, and body panels. The taillights, too, are sleek, taking their cue from the equally compact A-Class.

Step inside and you will be greeted by a dash that is filled  with the latest in digital tech. Buyers will get either a pair of 7-inch displays, a 7-inch monitor with a 10.25-inch unit, or a 10.25-inch duo showing all the info you need while on  the move. This info is controlled by the new Mercedes-Benz User Experience or MBUX interface that allows one to interact with the car using either the touchscreen, a command controller, or Intelligent Voice Control.  Augmented Reality and head-up display complement all this high-tech wizardry.

Speaking of high-tech, the new B-Class borrows some of its semi-autonomous driving capabilities from its alrger S-Class brother. This means it gets stuff like the ability to steer, brake, and accelerate on its own up to a certain speed. And it is helped out by autonomous emergency braking and lane keep ssist, among other driver aids.

As for power, the new B-Class can be spec’d with a pair of 2.0-liter diesels making wither 148- or 188hp. A slew of gasoline motors are also on ofer. And these can be paired with a new 8-speed dual clutch gearbox.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz B-Class will be available in dealerships real soon.
