As far as the Miata Club Philippines is concerned, the only way to experience the full potential and fun-to-drive nature of the Mazda Miata (MX-5) roadster is to let it loose on the race track. That’s the purpose of the Miata Cup, a long-running racing series open to member of the car club.

This year’s edition of the Miata Cup held its opening round last April 22, 2018 at the 4.2 km-long Clark International Speedway (CIS) in Pampanga. As with its previous season, the 2018 Miata Cup is open to all generations of the MX-5, may it be stock or race-ready.

Of its rules, the Miata Cup is into 5 classes. Each class is based on a lap time bracketing system. Drivers are free to choose which class to enter. Only that to earn points, he or she must not go faster than the set lap time indicated on that particular class. At the end of the year, the class champion with the most consistent times in the final race will take home the Miata Cup.

“The series also goes hand in hand with Mazda’s Jinba Ittai philosophy as it aims to make the driver be as one with the car on the race track. This has been in the DNA of the MX-5 ever since the open-top roadster was introduced in 1989. Every Mazda vehicle has since derived its fun-to-drive appeal from this philosophy,” says Mikko David, Press and Customer Relations Manager of Bermaz Auto Philippines, the exclusive distributor of Mazda vehicles in the country. “Our goal is to develop the driving and racing skills of MCP members,” he adds.

With its opening round in the bag, the 2018 Miata Cup will head down south at the Batangas Racing Circuit on June 24 and August 19 for its 2nd and 3rd rounds, respectively. Then on November 25, it will return to CIS for the season finale.
