Volvo has been teasing us for quite some time now with its plans to have an all-electric or hybrid vehicle in its lineup. In line with this, the Swedish brand also said that it would restructure performance arm Polestar to become a standalone unit. Well, Polestar has come out as a future maker of electric and hybrid vehicles. And it has even unveiled its first offering: the aptly named Polestar 1.

The 2+2 grand tourer takes its cue from the Volvo arsenal by utilizing the brand’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). But while it may have Volvo underpinnings, Polestar used its performance car expertise to throw in goodies to make its cars fun to drive. It will get goodies like the world’s first Ohline Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension, a double electric rear axle for excellent torque vectoring, and a lightweight carbon fiber body, just to name a few.

As for the hybrid part, the Polestar 1 will be a gasoline-electric hybrid with an output of 600hp and 1,000Nm of torque. And with a driving range of 150km on pure electric mode, it promises to be a performance machine with a clean, thrifty conscience.

Besides these, the Polestar 1 will utilize a new ownership method by enabling clients to order the car online. Apart from this, one can drive home their Polestar 1 by simply paying a two or three year subscription fee with no deposits, fees, or other additional charges. The all-in subscription fee will include benefits like servicing pickup and delivery and car rentals within the Volvo and Polestar vehicle lineup.

Polestar also noted that it will be fielding a few more offerings down the line. The Polestar 2 wil be a midsize Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) that is poised to do battle with the likes of the Tesla Model 3. All these vehicles wil be built at the Polestar Production Center in China.

Order books for the Polestar 1 are now open.  While one can soon order online through an app and soon-to-come-online portal, Polestar is also set to construct a host of dealerships around the world, catering to folks who still want to see their vehicle in the metal before taking delivery. Expect to see the models arrive sometime in 2019.
