Earlier this year, Porsche Asia Pacific rolled out the Licence to Thrill competition in search of the first-ever Driver of the Year. After months of grueling theory and practical tests, the results are finally in and the Driver of the Year has been found.
From a pool of over 3,600 hopefuls coming from some 13 countries in the Asia Pacific region, Mohd Elyas Bin Zakaria from Malaysia took home the coveted title, along with a trip to the Porsche Experience Center in Los Angeles, California. Of course, the win wasn’t exactly a walk in the park as he had to undergo a series of tests that pushed him and the rest of the participants to the limit.
It began with an online theory test to show just how well participants knew Porsche and its colorful history. The aforementioned 3,600 entrats were then watered down as only the best of the best were left to compete against each other. The contest culminated in a practical track test that saw around 30 hopefuls duke it out at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia.
Here, contestants put the various Porsche models, such as the Porsche Macan, Cayenne, 911, 718, and Panamera (in various trims) through their paces. Naturally, the tests weren’t your ordinary track events as these included rather odd trials like a Reverse Gymkhana, among others.
All told, the event was meant to see who among the hopefuls had the know-how and passion to match their show.
