Remember the Chevrolet Blazer? It’s back, this time as a crossover

The Blazer name for most American car enthusiasts is synonymous with an off-road vehicle produced by Chevrolet back in the day. The vehicle gained popularity during the 1970s and 1980s and was pretty much one of the forbearers of the SUV as we know it today. After a long hiatus, Chevrolet brings the Blazer name back to life for the 2019 model year.

No, this isn’t the squarish offering it was back then. Nor is it a rugged ladder-on-frame vehicle. Rather, it is an attention-grabbing crossover with a host of swoopy curves and design lines. And it even takes styling inspiration from the equally iconic Camaro.

Step inside and you’ll see more Camaro influences with touches like rounded air vents and other little details. An 8-inch infotainment display dominates the center console. Tech goodies such as wireless charging, mobile device connectivity, six USB ports, electronic locking glovebox, power tailgate, and auto heated steering wheel and seats that can be activated via the remote start system.

Powering the new Blazer are a pair of gasoline motors that displace either 2.5- or 3.6-liters. The former is a four-cylinder that puts out 193hp and 255Nm while the latter is a V6 that delivers 305hp and 365Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to a 9-speed gearbox and available all-wheel drive.

The all-wheel drive system is notable in that it uses Traction Select technology that allows it to operate as a front-wheel driver during noram everyday driving. A more sophisticated twin-clutch all-wheel drive system is likewise an option.

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer will hit dealerships early next year.
