In 2002, Porsche stunned the world by introducing a most unlikely model in its lineup—the Porsche Cayenne. Many folks, hardcore enthusiasts in particular, thought their beloved brand had gone mad by succumbing to the then-growing SUV trend. As history shows us, however, Porsche had the last laugh as the Cayenne has sold more than 760,000 copies and gone on to become one of its volume sellers.

Fifteen years later, the German brand is back with the third-generation Porsche Cayenne.  Based heavily on the iconic 911, Porsche says the new model is sleeker, more aggressive, and more expressive in design and execution. You can see a lot of 911 styling influences in the details and the overall vibe. The lineage is clearly seen in the lines.

Having 911 DNA naturally means that driving performance is at the core of this sporty yet practical Porsche. At the heart of the new Cayenne is a pair of V6 turbocharged motors offer true driving pleasure. The base Cayenne gets a 3.0-liter turbo V6 motor that puts out 340hp and 450Nm of torque. One can blast from 0-100kph in just 5.9 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package and hit a 245kph top speed.

If this isn’t enough, one can opt for the smaller yet more potent 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 that develops 440hp and 550Nm. This one lets the Cayenne S rocket from 0-100kph in just 4.9 ticks and achieve a 265kph terminal velocity.

Just like the 911, the third-gen Cayenne gets mixed-size tires and rear-axle steering, as well as a host of goodies to give it excellent on- and off-road prowess. Active all-wheel drive comes standard, as do three chamber air suspension, and Porsche 4D chassis control.

Another factor that contributes to the new Cayenne’s dynamic performance is the tech-savvy gearbox. The 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission now boasts quicker response times and shorter ratios.  Then there is the Sport Chrono Package that features several driving modes to suit one\s style. Drivers can choose between Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, or Individual mode that allows for further customization.

As if this isn’t enough, drivers can press the Sport Response button to unleash maximum driving fun via the engine and transmission maps. A PSM Sport mode likewise brings out the Cayenne’s full potential.

This being a Porsche, technology is definitely at the forefront. The headlights, for instance, come in either the standard LED configuration or the upgraded Porsche Dynamic Light System. There is also the extensive range of equipment such as front and rear ParkAssist, LTE telephone with Wifi hotspot, and pedestrian detection, just to name a few.

Despite the long list of standard and optional niceties fitted on the new Porsche Cayenne, the German luxury sports car maker claims that the new model is around 65kg lighter than its predecessor. Thanks to the use of lightweight alloys and steel, a body made from aluminum a chassis made from alloy, and a lithium-ion polymer starter batter, the 2018 Porsche Cayenne weighs 1,985kg—down from 2,040kg.

To showcase just how significant the Cayenne is in the Porsche hierarchy, the Porsche Museum will be holding a special exhibit entitled New Tracks, Every Destination, Always Porsche, which shows the historical influence of the development of the SUV. It will likewise be a chance to get up close and personal with the new model. It will run until February 2018.
